Course description
This is an IV therapy refresher course designed for RNs who wishes to review principles of IV therapy and practice skills in inserting peripheral IV and accessing central lines (PICC, external cathethers and implanted ports.)
Participants will receive 30 CE units under BRN CE provider # 14783 with a course title of
"A Refresher course in IV Therapy: Indications and Preventing Complications"
Theory component is delivered through on-line study and must be completed prior to class schedule. Skills day includes practice on manikin. Option to perform livestick if fellow students agree. Otherwise, you may bring your "friend" with you.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to: - Describe purposes for venipuncture.
- Identify potential intravenous (IV) sites and sites to avoid.
- Identify types of prepared IV solutions.
- Identify correct type of tubing to use.
- Determine types of tourniquets that may be used.
- Identify signs and symptoms of fluid volume excess or fluid volume deficit.
- Discuss unexpected outcomes related to a peripheral intravenous infusion and related interventions.
- Describe steps for insertion of a peripheral IV device.
- Troubleshoot intravenous infusions.
- Identify signs and symptoms of complications from intravenous therapy.
- Discontinue a peripheral IV device.
- Identify reasons for discontinuing peripheral IV access.
- Describe unexpected outcomes of discontinuing peripheral IV access and related interventions.
- Identify common types of central vascular access devices.
- Identify uses of central vascular access devices.
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of vascular access devices.
- Draw blood from a central venous catheter.
- Draw blood from an implanted infusion port.
- Describe how to connect an IV infusion to a vascular access device.
- Correctly perform a dressing change of a vascular access device.
- Identify the two most common complications of a vascular access device.
- Identify unexpected outcomes and related interventions regarding vascular access device management.
